My family used to have a large van. It became a home away from home. Many travel memories were possible because of that van. We valued it. Kept it clean. Repaired it when necessary. It was important to us.
Then we moved. The van couldn’t make it up the hill to our new house in the winter. It used a lot of gas. It needed more repair. The cost of keeping it became greater than its value to us.
We replaced it.
It turns out, values are invented. A choice adopted by the holder. Re-assignable.
Material things have value. Relationships have value. Feelings have value. Beliefs have value.
Until the cost is too great.
It takes a generous effort on your own behalf to let them go.
