The DWC Catechist Scholarship Program

The DWC Catechist Scholarship Program is a joint effort between the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and Wheeling Jesuit University that provides a framework for exemplary Catholic students to serve in local parishes as catechists and gain practical experience in parish ministry. Students can receive this yearly $1,000 scholarship up to three times during their career at Wheeling Jesuit.

Program Structure

A first-year recipient assists a catechist each Sunday in a local parish and works through an introductory catechist formation series with the parish’s DRE.

A second-year recipient serves as a catechist in a local parish and works through an intermediate catechist formation series with the Director of Formation & Mission.

A third-year recipient serves as a catechist in a local parish and has the opportunity to earn course credit toward the pastoral ministry minor by planning and facilitating a retreat at the parish and completing a capstone presentation.

Application Requirements

Applications for the first year must include a resume, a one-page letter of intent, and two letters of recommendation.

A student seeking renewal for the second year must submit an updated resume, letter of intent, and letters of recommendation from the catechist that he/she assisted, the parish’s DRE, and a member of the WJU theology department or campus ministry team.

A student seeking renewal for the third year must submit an updated resume, letter of intent, and letters of recommendation from the parish’s DRE and from a member of the WJU theology department or campus ministry team.
