History

The first Catholics arrived in New Cumberland in the 1860s. Priests visited the families occasionally, but it was not until 1904 that a mission was formally organized. Bishop Donahue sent a priest to work with a group of Polish immigrants who had been brought in to work at a local pottery factory. The first church was built at Rocky Side on property donated by the factory. In 1920, the mission was elevated to parish status with Rev. Francis Olszewski as pastor. A school was opened in 1921 and staffed by the Sisters Auxiliaries of the Apostolate until its closing in 1956. A second church was built in 1938. The present church was built in 1968.
