In 1910 a priest was sent to organize Weirton's Catholics, many of them Polish immigrants, into a parish. Weirton Steel Company donated the property for a church that was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Language differences led to the creation of a National parish for the Polish community that was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Mary. In 1917, Weirton Steel helped to purchase a property with three buildings that served as a church, rectory, and school. The community was relocated in 1966 to Weirton Heights, where a new church was dedicated on November 1, 1968. Sisters of St. Francis of Our Lady of Perpetual Help staffed the parish school for over seventy-five years prior to its closure in 2001.
