History

The Catholic community in Princeton predates the founding of the church in 1895. The first Catholics were brought to the region by the Virginian Railroad and coal companies in neighboring McDowell County. The initial ten to twelve families were organized by Rev. Emil Olivier, who ministered to them from St. Mary Parish in Wytheville, Virginia. The families gathered for Mass in private homes, then a theater and the county courthouse, until the first church was built in 1914. Diocesan priests staffed the parish until 1941, when the Oblates of Mary Immaculate were invited to take over the parish, remaining until 1981. The present church was built by the community and dedicated in 1967.
