History

SS. Peter and Paul Parish was established at Scarbro in 1906. Initial members were immigrants from southern and Eastern Europe who came to work in the coal mines of Fayette County. Rev. John Swint was the first priest to visit the area in 1904. Rev. Matthias Madert organized a parish a year later. Missions were established at Minden and Kilsyth. A school was opened in 1914 and staffed by the Sisters Auxiliaries of the Apostolate. A new school was built in 1967. In the early 1960s it became apparent that the parish should be moved to Oak Hill. After 12 long years of transition, a new church was dedicated on April 22, 1979, and the move to Oak Hill was complete.
