St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Parish, Wheeling, and St. Ladislaus Parish, Wheeling, were suppressed June 20, 1995, and their territories merged into the territory of St. Alphonsus Parish, Wheeling.
St. Alphonsus Parish was established in 1856 to serve the German community of Wheeling. Diocesan priests staffed the parish until the Capuchin Friars arrived in 1884. They remained at the parish until 1994 when it was transferred back to Diocesan control. The parish has built two churches over its history. The present church was built in 1886 and is noted for its stained glass, woodcarvings, and unique statuary. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. St. Alphonsus operated a grade school (1859-1988), high school (1927-1940), and orphanage (1891-1956) over its history. The Sisters of St. Joseph and Sisters of Divine Providence both served in the parish. In 1995 St. Ladislaus Parish and St. Mary Parish were incorporated into St. Alphonsus.
