History

A Catholic presence was established in Greenbrier County in the mid-nineteenth century when the first Irish immigrants arrived. By 1853 the families were organized into Immaculate Conception Parish in Lewisburg. Mass was celebrated in private homes until a former Methodist church was purchased in 1867. The parish was relocated to Ronceverte in 1892. Construction of a new church began in 1916 with the help of parishioners. Bricks were made at the site and lumber came from neighboring forests. The church was completed by 1920 and dedicated in 1923. The name was changed to St. Catherine of Siena at this time. The pastors at Ronceverte have served Catholics in Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, and Nicholas Counties.
