White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986, United States
St. John, Sweet Springs, suppressed as a mission June 21, 1994. Now serves as a chapel.
St. Charles Borromeo Parish was established by 1876 as a mission of Immaculate Conception Parish, Lewisburg. The initial community was made up of Irish laborers who were brought into the area by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. The families met in a simple wooden structure, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, until the first church was built in 1897, at which time the name was changed to St. Charles Borromeo. The mission was elevated to an independent parish in 1903. The present granite church was built in 1959. Over its history, the pastors of St. Charles Borromeo Parish have had the responsibility of ministering to Catholics in neighboring communities, including Marlinton, Rainelle, Ronceverte, Springdale, and Sweet Springs.
