History

The first Catholics to settle in Moundsville arrived in the early 1850s. Many were Irish immigrants who had worked on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The community was organized into a mission of St. James Cathedral, Wheeling, by 1853 and the first church was built and dedicated in 1856. Rev. James Cunningham was the first priest assigned to the parish. St. Francis Xavier Church has served as the center of Catholic activity in the surrounding region for much of its history. Some of the missions attended from Moundsville were Cameron, Board Tree, Fairmont, Farmington, Glover's Gap, Littleton, and Mannington. The present church was built in 1910.
