The following Church is incorporated into St. Francis Xavier Parish, Parkersburg: The territory of St. Monica Parish, Lubeck, is merged into the territory of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Parkersburg, with the former Parish becoming a Mission of St. Francis Xavier effective November 26, 2017.
St. Francis Xavier Parish was one of the first faith communities in the Diocese. On property purchased by Bishop Whelan, a small brick church was built in 1849 for the twelve families of the parish. First known as St. Mary's, the parish was later rededicated to St. Francis Xavier. A larger, old-world-style church, dedicated in 1870, is still noted for its magnificent mural paintings. Significant restoration projects in 1978 and 1994 have returned the church to its original grandeur.
