History

This northern panhandle parish was established in 1854 by Bishop Whelan, with the first church was dedicated in 1854. Many original parishioners were Irish, German, and Italian immigrants. The present church was built in 1924 under Rev. Leopold Hermanns. A parish school was established in 1917 with 72 students and 3 Sisters of Divine Providence as teachers. They were followed two years later by Franciscan Sisters of Charity of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and eventually by lay teachers until its closure in 2013.
