History

St. Joseph the Worker Parish was founded in 1957 to serve the growing number of Catholics in the city of Weirton. The families of the initial community lived in the Weirton Heights section of the city and had attended St. Paul Parish. The community gathered to celebrate liturgy at Madonna High School until the first church was built in 1962. Renovated in 1982, it continues in use today. A new rectory was built in 1981. St. Joseph the Worker Grade School was founded in 1958. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace staffed the school until it was transferred to lay control.
