History

The growing Catholic population in the Lubeck area of Wood County led to the founding of St. Monica Mission in July 1976. Rev. Leo Lydon, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Parkersburg, organized the community and oversaw the purchase of property and a residence to serve as the first worship space. Parishioners converted the basement of the residence into a chapel where liturgies were celebrated for almost ten years. In 1982 a committee led by Mr. Albert Kroop planned a new church building. In January 1984, construction of a multi-purpose building began. Bishop Joseph H. Hodges dedicated the new church on the feast of St. Monica, August 27, 1984.
