History

St. Patrick Parish was organized by Rev. D. P. Walsh in 1874. Many initial members were Irish immigrants who had worked on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Others came to the area to work in the coal mines. As the first church built in Summers County, St. Patrick's soon became the center of Catholic activity for the region. Among churches tracing their origins to the parish are St. Francis de Sales, Beckley; Sacred Heart, Springdale; and St. Mary of the Greenbrier, Alderson. The first church, a one-story frame house, was built by 1878 and later converted into the rectory when the second church was built in 1899. Bishop Patrick Donahue dedicated this church on July 20, 1899 and it continues to be used by the community.
