WHAT: Intergenerational activities are growing in popularity – that is at the glorious 50 x 50 garden plot tended by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph in Wheeling, West Virginia.  To help our youth understand how food is grown and harvested, children ages 4-6 from Holy Family Child Care and Development Center in Wheeling, will assist the sisters picking carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and tomatoes.    Using the fruits of their labor, Chef Jeff Freshwater and the culinary team from Cura Hospitality will create salad for lunch as well as teach the children to make homemade frozen yogurt – a delicious and refreshing summertime treat!  Holy Family is a sponsored ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph.  Holy Family received a grant from the Congregation’s Generous Promises Grant Fund to host its first summer camp program for Pre-Kindergarten students.  The young campers will make their visit to Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, from 10:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Research shows that intergenerational activities focusing on nature and the environment have a positive impact on both children and older adults.  Children reported feeling more positive about the environment and wanting to protect it; older adults learned that students are receptive to their knowledge and views. The sisters started the garden in February where half the garden is dedicated to ornamental flowers while the other half to mainly peppers and tomatoes used in the preparation and canning of Sister Rosalie’s famous spaghetti sauce!  The sauce is the undisputed star during the open-to-the public spaghetti dinner held each year in November, a huge event with more than 1,000 tickets sold annually.
